***COLLOQUIUM ON HEALTHCARE TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT***

Reserve your place NOW for an opportunity to attend not just another
meeting, but an opportunity, whether you are a manager having to make
decisions about purchasing a new technology, an industrialist
developing innovative technology, a scientist about to make a grant
application or a clinician interested in how the effectiveness of a
technology is evaluated, to hear and discuss with experts concerned
with differing aspects of health technology evaluation.

DATE: Friday 19 June 1998
VENUE: City University, Department of Radiography, Rutland Place,
                 Charterhouse Square, London, EC1M 6PA
TIME: 10.00am - 4.00pm

                                       S P E A K E R S

* Prof Richard Lilford (Director of Research & Development, West
    Midlands, NHS Executive)
* Mr Eric Winiarski (Area Programme Manager, Medical Engineering,
    EPSRC)
* Dr Norman Waterman (Quo-Tec Ltd and Medlink)
* Mr John Hutton (Vice-President of European Operations, MEDTAP
    International)
* Mr Ian Hammond (Chief Executive Officer, Bedford and Shires Health
    & Care NHS Trust)
* Ms Kay Pattison (Head of HTA Section, Department of Health)

WHY? The task of technological assessment, whatever the field of
application, is essentially the same; namely to provide a
comprehensive forecast and evaluation of the likely outcomes of
technological actions (or strategies) with respect to social,
economic and environmental criteria, paying attention to side-effects
both good and bad.

So, when assessing the appropriateness of a health care technology it
is important to consider not only measures of clinical effectiveness
and the evaluation of costs and cost benefits, but also the more
qualitative aspects of outcome, such as patient preferences and
values, health status and the quality of life. This is a complex
task but it is important that policy and decision makers give
adequate consideration to all these often competing and conflicting
factors.

SCOPE
The colloquium will highlight the need for a wider appreciation of
health care technology assessment, particularly in relation to
innovative technology. The range of issues that should be addressed
will be identified. These include collecting information relevant to
the technology, and evaluating its potential for clinical application
in order that an appropriate business case can be generated.
