Dear List Users,
I am writing a paper on ecological sustainability and would like to focus on
ethical environmental journalism in achieving 'progress toward
sustainability' (Hodge 1997). I would like to examine both climate change
and ecosystem disruption as the primary areas of concern. So my question
then is what constitutes ethical environmental journalism within the context
of climate change and ecosystem protection? Are there any criteria that
could be derived from columns, reports and articles in the press to
determine what is ethical in any case regarding the reporting the facts and
their evaluation?
Can anyone forward examples of excellent environmental reporting with an
analysis [brief] please.
I would consider as an example of ethical environmental journalism,
reporting and analysis which may be considered ethical in the sense that it
is 'value constructive'. Value constructive means that it does support and
uphold 'values' that are 'common and healthy' for communities. This is my
own term so if you could assess the criteria in your own way of thinking it
would be appreciated. Of course one may argue that some values are
destructive [i.e. communities of raiding and hoarding societies] but any
environmental reporting that debunks and exposes actions that are contrary
to common sense values like 'clean air, water and enhanced conservation of
biological diversity' make for constructive valuations to most people within
the 'industrialized nations' ...right? I have included an article that is
located on a very horrible site that I believe to be an example of value
constructive and ethical environmental journalism. It is an excellent
analysis of climate change by Molly Ivins in Texas.
