Dear Seeker,
The re-introduction of humans in the forest where they have a right to be
can take drastic actions and result in dire consequences. Most hand fallers
now are retired or have changed careers, having been replaced by mechanized
feller bunchers. There are many successful reintroductions of Mountain goats
in the Pacific Northwest simply because they do quite well without wolves
and grizzly bears. And they don't need forest but rocks with grasses and
southern exposures. Paraprofessional reintroductions of all sorts involve
risks.

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION SOUGHT: A letter from California's
Environmental Protection Information Center and other organizations
calls for an independent investigation in the death of Earth First!
activist David Chain. Chain was killed by a felled tree while
protesting logging by Pacific Lumber Company on September 17th. The
letter recites a history of conflict between forest activists and law
enforcement officers, contending, "they may be suppressing and
neglecting key evidence in this case." A video taken an hour before
Chain's death contradicts Pacific Lumber's statement loggers were
unaware of the presence of activists in the forest, and contains
footage of company workers threatening to fall trees in the direction
of protestors.
