25 years ago when I was 20 years old, the young "women" who were my
contemporaries insisted vehemently that they be referred to as "WOMEN!"
Now as these very same individuals are entering middle age they gleefully
refer to themselves as "*girls*."
Also note the frequent use of the term "girls" in pop culture--"Spice
Girls" etc.
