Our testing suggested that all depended on the quality of the typewriting
to be scanned.
2 years ago, using Textbridge Pro with HP IIcx flatbed scanner, we found
that only high quality electronic/electric typewriting gave a sufficiently
low error rate to be worth attempting. Older lists on mechanical
typewriters cost too much in correction time - it was cheaper for a good
operator to rekey.
Of course, OCR performance is continually improving, and I'd be interested
to hear of any software that appears to do better now.
