Guildhall Library Publications, in association with the Centre for
Metropolitan History, is pleased to announce that the proceedings of the
ARCHIVES AND THE METROPOLIS conference are now available [xiv + 210 pp
fully illustrated, ISBN 0 900422 45 9]. They have been edited for
publication by M.V. Roberts, formerly Deputy Director of Libraries and Art
Galleries, Corporation of London.The price is L13.99- see order form at the
end of this communication.
The conference, sponsored by the Corporation of London and the Centre for
Metropolitan History (Institute of Historical Research), was held in the
City of London in July 1996. It gave for perhaps the first time an overview
of the documentary riches of some of the greatest cities in the world, from
Europe to the Far East, from North Africa to the New World.

The conference papers, outlined below, include:- individual municipal
archives from ancient times to the present; the development of
record-keeping and archive buildings; archaeological archives; medical

will be a standard work for historians, archivists and students for many
years to come.
