Although this is somewhat late in the day, the following may be of help. It
is extracted from a set of citation guidelines compiled by Dr. Chris Baggs at
DILS, UWA in 1997 in response to very similar concerns:
INTERNET SOURCES
Entire Services
WWW Homepages
Basic form: Homepage Title. Hp. Date (last update or copyright date, if
available). Medium. Information supplier (if mentioned). Available: URL.
Access date.
Example:
The British Library. Hp. 1997. Online. British Library Board. Available:
http://portico.bl.uk/. 6 Sept. 1997.
It is important to note that punctuation in the "Available" statement should
be as found in the source; the only elements permissibly supplied are the
colon after "Available" and the full stop at the end of the "Available"
statement.
The access date is the date on which the electronic source was viewed or
retrieved.
A Journal or Magazine Article
Basic form: Author's name. "Title of article". Publication information.
Medium. Available: URL. Access date.
Example:
Edwards, Judith. "Electronic Journals: Problem or Panacea?" Ariadne: The Web
Version 10 (1997): 27 pars. Online. Available:
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue10/journals/. 1 Sept. 1997.
The absence of pagination is a problem. One can either state "n. pag." (no
pagination), or give the number of paragraphs (e.g. "12 paras."). Stating the
number of paragraphs allows for reference to a particular part of an article.
Example for citation from discussion lists
Alston, Robin. "Old BM." 4 Apr. 1997. Online posting. Lis-libhist. Available:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/lis-libhist/1997004/0004.html. 4 Sept. 1997.
Besides the author, subject and date of the message, the citation should
include the name of the discussion list (here Lis-libhist).
Example of citation from personal email
Stoker, David ([log in to unmask]). "Funding proposal." E-mail to Tim Cullen
([log in to unmask]). 20 Jan. 1997.
Include in parentheses the E-Mail addresses of both the sender and recipient,
capitalizing the log-in names: indicate date when message was sent.
For a detailed discussion of the question of citing electronic sources see Xia
Li and Nancy B. Crane, Electronic Styles: a Handbook for Citing Electronic
Information, 2nd ed. Medford, N.J.: Information Today, 1996.
