I am glad that I was not being simply crotchety in having the same
reaction as that of David Hay: at best it seems very unfair to distinguish
being grades of past competence. I suspect, however, that in this as in
many things we are in an age of watersheds, and the real motivation here is
the approach of some kind of Chartered Status, for which there may well
eventually be a
universally applicable exam. Then we shall be in the same position as my
maternal grandfather who, though a conscientious accountant in those far
off days, was never actually chartered, and suffered (I think)
self-depreciation as a result.
