Further to Sarah Flynn's request for information about the
registration strategies / programmes from other professions may I
suggest colleagues look at the Library Association's information
about Chartership,
<http://www.la-hq.org.uk/directory/careers/cmla.html>
which might provide some useful additional information for the
current discussion.
They also provide some information about CPD issues at
<http://www.la-hq.org.uk/directory/training/cpd.html>
I am under the impression that Chartered status (ALA) only brings
material rewards in some local authority posts but is seen more
widely as a useful indicator of professional development and
employers may be willing to release some time for study. The
emphasis is firmly set on "professional development and progression
since the completion of academic study" and seems to cater for a
wider variety of employment situations.
