Dear member,
RAE 2001: Nomination of Panel Members (Assessment Unit 65 'Communication
& Media')
As you know the arrangements for RAE 2001 are currently being put in place
and subject associations have been invited to contribute to this process.
Subject Associations are currently being asked to make recommendations
about two things: (1) the structure of panels and (2) nomination of panel
members and so we are writing to ask you for any observations you wish to
make about these matters. In particular we would like you to comment on
whether there are areas of research or specialist interests which you feel
may not have been adequately represented last time or are in danger of not
being adequately represented next time. Secondly if you want to suggest
names for the panel, please do so. We suggest up to four nominations, and
don't feel shy to nominate yourself if you feel you fit the bill! However,
that said, it is obviously important to nominate people who you think
would be generally acceptable and known to and respected by our peer
group. Please reply by email if possible to: [log in to unmask] by
November 30th 1998. Alternatively by snail-mail to me at the above
address. The committee will then draw up a list of recommendations. We
shall be consulting with other subject associations in the field
(especially SCCCMS who are conducting a similar exercise). Submissions
have to be in by December 11th, so please get your replies in soon as it's
a busy time of year for us all.
I quote below (emphasis added by me) from the funding councils' letter
inviting responses:
"Funding bodies are seeking information on two levels:
a) The structure of assessment panels - the key fields of research that
should be covered by a panel's membership and other more specialist areas
of research which, while not justifying full representation on panels,
might require the appointment of specialist assessors to advise panels.
b) The names of any recommended individuals (with order of preference
identified) for each key field of research and specialist area of research
to be assessed by each panel."
Criteria for appointment to assessment panels are: "Pre-eminence in
research, or the demonstrated ability to make judgements about research
quality. Membership will thus not be limited to those working in higher
education institutions. Hefce encourages nomination of appropriate members
with a professional background from industry or from other orgaisations
that use research".
According to the letter further details about the framework of the next
RAE can be found on http://www.niss.ac.uk/education/hefc/rae however it
wasn't available when I looked!
Hope to see you at our conference on December 11th & 12th - if you haven't
heard about it yet contact:[log in to unmask] or Pam Hibberd,
0114.225.2226 Mon-Thurs after 1.30p.m.
Best wishes,
Tessa Perkins, (Chair, AMCCS)
