With the continually growing size of individual, project and departmental 
web services, and the demand for a greater variety of topics presented on 
the Web, the information within these pages demands an increasing amount 
of management. In addition, the need for a coherent structure either
imposed on existing pages, or developed for a new site is recognised as 
being essential for future maintenance and development if the full 
potential of the Web is to be realised. 

This is a workshop aimed at those who have, or are likely to have, 
responsibility for managing information provided through a World Wide 
Web service. The workshop aims to introduce and explore some of the 
issues of website management, as well as some of the tools and techniques
available to help in effective management of a site and the information 
it contains. 
 

The workshop is suitable for those from an academic, library, computing 
or administrative background with responsibility for managing the content 
of a (department, faculty, etc.) WWW site. It is not a WWW server or system 
administration course. Participants will be able to take away some of the 
Web pages created during the workshop on a floppy disk plus useful addresses 
found. 
 Workshop Content: 
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and 
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. 
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop 
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:

 *   discussion of the challenges involved in managing a multi-contributor WWW environment 
 *   a case study of the development of an institutional Web-based information strategy 
 *   practical aspects of document management including use of 
Metadata, Web statistics, Style Sheets and document templates 
 *   an overview of site management tools 
 *   hands-on sessions using document and site management tools 
 *   an overview of legal and copyright issues related to providing 
information via the Web  

By the end of the workshop participants will have... 

 *   had an opportunity to discuss the major issues involved 
in managing information on the Web  
 *   seen real examples of different approaches to managing 
Web information  
 *   developed and used templates to apply a "house style" 
 
 *   investigated different techniques for providing navigation aids  
 *   seen examples of Metadata and its importance in information 
management 
 *   incoporated Metadata into Web pages  
 *   explored the use of Style Sheets and created HTML files using 
Style Sheets  
 *   investigated the differences between managing information by 
hand and using a site mangement tool  
 *   gained some practical experience of using site management tools 
such as Microsoft's FrontPage 
 
 *   been introduced to the legal and copyright issues on the Internet  
 *   the basic knowledge to devise an action plan for establishing a 
Web-based information strategy  

Participants will also have an opportunity to: 

 *   develop a variety of navigation frontends for a sample Web site  
 *   investigate the DublinCore Metadata generator online tool  
 *   create external Style Sheet files  
 *   develop a web site using Microsoft FrontPage  
 *   explore some of the more advanced features of Microsoft FrontPage  

Workshop Requirements:


Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a 
browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST have authored 
simple Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as for 
including images and hypertext links is essential. Experience of using 
Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening and closing
applications such as a Web browser would be helpful. 


The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher
education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant
fees.
