I strongly agree with this sentiment. This sudden changeover is
causing us all sorts of problems - our local leaflets about BIDS and
Compendex had already been printed and my training programme arranged
when I heard the news.
Plus, we sent out new 'no ability to create a personal account'
ATHENS passwords earlier the summer to all staff and students
registered for BIDS, encouraging people to ask about creating
personal accounts only if they wanted to access BIDS from off-campus.
This process has caused some confusion and ill-feeling, despite that
fact that we tried to keep it as smooth, simple and painless as
possible. We will now presumably have to send out a second set of
information about how to create personal accounts to all our
engineers who currently use BIDS-Compendex, apologising for the fact
that their passwords will have been changed twice in 6 months! (I'm
assuming that EDINA's version of Compendex will require personal
accounts, but I realise that we can't actually be sure of anything
until CHEST makes some more information available)
Finally, what worries me most is that some engineers will be put off
using Compendex altogether - some of our lot are surprisingly
technophobic and easily intimidated by changes to interfaces etc.
I'd be interested to know how other folk are faring.
