I have tried it out between here and Paris, with mixed results. Sharing
applications seems to work quite well, though I just tried applications
like MS Word, not CD database searches. You can also use textual on-line
chat.
The voice telephony function is not very effective, mainly because of
parts of sentences being lost. We tried this in both full-duplex and
half-duplex, but neither worked really well. I guessed that the system
changed the direction of transmission in half duplex according to
whether it detected sound at one end or the other, so we adopted the
radio technique of saying "over" when finishing a sentence and then
shutting up to allow the other person to speak. I think that using
loudspeakers may cause problems, because of the received sound reaching
the microphone, but I still had problems when I tried headphones.
I don't have a video camera so haven't tried that. I'll be interested in
other people's experience.
