RESEARCH ASSISTANT in
SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC STUDIES,
UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
A research assistant is sought to work on a Nuffield Foundation
funded project on Skill Formation and the Occupational Choice of
Young People. It is anticipated that the successful applicant
will have completed a higher degree, preferably in economics,
although other subjects will be considered. A substantial
component in (micro-) econometrics or statistics is essential.
The minimum requirement is a good undergraduate degree.
Experience in the use of computer software, preferably Stata, will
be a distinct advantage.
In this project we will follow school-leavers through the first
three years of their labour market career to analyse the process
of skill formation. We will focus in particular on (i) the
factors which influence school-leavers' preferences for
occupations and skills, and how they respond to their experience
in the labour market; and (ii) the factors which determine whether
school-leavers find a job, a training place or college course
which matches their preferences. These two broad issues will be
modelled using standard cross-sectional techniques and survival
analysis.
The data we will analyse are from Lancashire Careers Service
(LCS), and cover all school-leavers who entered the labour market
between 1988 and 1992. Each individual is observed monthly, and
from this information detailed career histories can be
constructed.
The appointment will be for a period of 15 months (depending on
salary), from December 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The salary will be in the range ukp 15,735 to ukp 17,570 p.a.
depending upon qualifications and experience. A part-time
appointment can be considered.
Informal enquiries will be welcomed by Martyn Andrews (Tel:
0161-275-4874, Fax: 0161-275-4796 or email:
[log in to unmask]) or Steve Bradley (email:
[log in to unmask]). Further particulars are also
available from Dr. Andrews.
Applications (one copy suitable for photocopying) giving full
details of qualifications, experience and the names and addresses of
three referees should be sent to Dr Martyn Andrews, School of
Economic Studies, The University of Manchester, Manchester M13 9PL.
Closing date 23 November 1998. Please quote reference number 795/98.
