Here's standard practice on S-news, which works well.
As an answer provider:
Respond directly to the list. This has the added
advantage of saving other list subscribers from
producing redundant answers to the same query.
As a questioner:
You may always post a good answer to the list
(with attribution).
As a list subscriber:
Many email packages, such as Eudora Pro and Microsoft
Outlook, allow you to sort messages to different
folders upon receipt. This allows you to accumulate
a repository of BUGS questions (and answers!) which is
searchable from within your email program. All my
messages with "[log in to unmask]" appearing
in the "from" field automatically are routed to a mail
message folder I call BUGS. I have also accumulated
a file of several thousand messages (queries and
answers) from s-news in this manner, and have found
it most helpful on numerous occasions.
Thanks to René Holst and Niels H. Veldhuijzen for
prompting this discussion.
