I can't agree with your response to Chris Emery's post. Sauce for the
goose etc here. Plenty of people on the list were snide and unpleasant
about Ted Hughes here a while back, without, I suspect, having read the
book that occasioned their scorn. Apparently it was ok to do this
because Hughes has enough fans out there and doesn't need defending.
This is a position I can't accept, although - having read the book - I
would say that BL is Hughes' weakest creation in many years.
Chris is right to prick the bubble that this list can sometimes become.
I'd love to see a debate as to why, say, Lavinia Greenlaw is worth
serious attention and Jeremy Prynne (say) is passe. The fact that, as of
now I disagree with that position is neither here nor there. The tone
used was a challenge, i thought, and fair enough at that. It's getting
us to respond isn't it, and not much does it seems, other than the
mighty prynne.
