I suppose I am asked to put up or shut up. My interest in theory
came from the Routledge New Critical Idiom series, I suppose.
My mind was trained in mathematics so it was very refreshing
to find these books. In relation to Martin Gardiner's question
I had added my new knowledge of theory to the Robert Crawford
instigated direction of thought. (He did win the Snell and I
tried to encourage him to explore the Enlightenment after
the Burns/Miller poem when he was REsearch Fellow at Glasgow.
But he will have forgotten all about that it was so many years
ago.
Despite Jacky Kay's Adoption Papers I cannot see a theoretical
impact on these young Scottish poets. But I could be wrong.
I was glad to see that Kathleen Jamie came through at last
in `Queen of Sheba' and fulfilled the promise recognised in
her in Edinburgh. But honestly Heaney's interest in language
is probably more (post)modern than the work coming out of Scotland.
And David Latane knows much more than I do cos he has visited
there recently while I am far away.
