Quiet Come As Nothing Else
(for those lurking on this list)
Quiet come as nothing else can,
bobbing in the joyous puddle of a moment
congratulatory, savoring its life ---
and we know secretly its meaning,
filling us with wonder
as children would look upon a rainbow after a storm.
Quiet is the heavenly intervention
that comes some fifteen, twenty, thirty times
over a lifetime, perhaps fewer ---
and what strikes one immediately is that
a quiet moment has ultimately the makings
of a shapeless melancholy, yet seems so innocent,
(red roses bloom in the face of such quiet)
which one day shall fall, narrow and lost,
around us with its sweet hollow arms
that shall so completely hold us all,
and so quell its monstrous loneliness.
