The recent discussion of why people read poetry has generated
also some consideration of political poetry, which has been as
inconclusive as such discussions usually are. It seems to be as
difficult to explain why so little current political poetry is
effective as it is to write effective political poetry in the first
place.
In hopes of giving some concreteness to the discussion, I'm
going to post a couple of my own political poems, Only Human and
Incident. I've e written other poems which were more overtly
political than these and which I wasn't wholly satisfied with; these
two poems represent an experimental attempt at using a less direct
approach. I solicit opinions on the question of whether these poems
constitute an effective alternative way, at least potentially, of
writing political poetry.
