My name is actually Stephen Duffy. I was born in 1951 in the North East
of England. The first time I read in public was circa 1970. The place, a
long dark room which was part of Durham University. I believe that also
on the bill that night was one Richard Caddel (Hi, Ric!).
I went on to read and perform regularly until my children were born but
subsequently found it rather difficult to find the time. During the mid
80's I organised _Wooden Lambs_ (Hi, Orlando!), a poetry venue which was
free and which featured guest poets as well as contributions from those
attending. I have been a "househusband" since 1988, looking after the
children who are now 8 and 9 years old.
I have found that the internet as medium rather than tool is responsible
for great changes in my attitude to poetry. This means considering the
possibilities of hypertext and creating webpages which utilise the
various methods of presenting text which HTML makes possible. I have
created interactive works and other pieces.
At present my work can involve using a variety of procedures such as the
use of found objects, cut and paste, "grepped" text, and ascii art, as
well as more conventional processes. There are also straightforward
pieces of poetry or prose. Some of my poems require that the reader view
them with a non proportional typeface. (Courier New rules!) I'm very
interested in forms which seem to be common on mailing lists - I'm
thinking in particular of that which at one time was known as the "prose
poem" but which is now simply referred to as a "text". Email is crucial
to all of this as it can serve to some extent as material, workspace,
reference library, forum, etc, etc.
I hope I can be a valuable contributor to this list.
Steve Duffy, aka krumm.
