The crew a little restless today: the less informed wanting to put back
to port & jack in the whole project. One was even caught singing, "Look
at the King...the King is in the altogether...": he's in the hold for
that. Meanwhile study of the charts continues:
"What is there in potential, if we could only place ourselves without
fear and in full emotional risk at the total disposal of the next
instant when we shall act, is the possibility of true, real action, that
will get the actions right." (Doug Oliver, Gr/ew 12, p101). Some
discussion of whether poetry can get any closer to pure action than it
can to pure music. One asks is emotional repression the main cause of
our malaise? Filed for further study.
My leisure seems lost now I'm doing time with these words. "Sermon
sift", "nothing to save", "her mission grab": must resist that, grasping
phrases that have resonance for me. Ah well, bravery in the shadows!
Looked up 'weasel' in tattered, coverless, anonymous desk-dictionary:
found 'weasel word' - struck by the derivation: "fr. the weasel's
reputed habit of sucking the contents out of an egg while leaving the
shell superficially intact." Hmmm. Blurred images of earth & cultures
in eco-catastrophe, tempered by image of Ukrainian eggs, gorgeously
coloured & patterned, but also empty. And of the apparent poem, shell
intact, with contents, if not sucked out, severely shaken & compressed
beyond 'normal' use. Hmmm.
Note: there is withered sedge and no bird-song in this poem. Her? La
belle dame, Mother Earth, other shes not yet encountered? If the push
is away from representation is that achieved by multi- rather than
non-representation (similarly, Language's push to multi-refential work
to escape clutches of a single autocratic, dominating voice: which was
dismissed, by those with will to misunderstand, as non-referential).
See subversion at work, but subverting what to what end? Is this a
private revolution or can anybody join? Restricted to IQ above 160?
Remind crew to be patient: early days on the voyage & stop making sense,
anyway. Read "1976 Streets" before turning in, to remember other ways
of making poems.
Courage,
onward & outward,
Pete.
