Assistant Archivist
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine Library (part of the
Wellcome Trust) is an international centre for the study of the history of
medicine and its holdings of printed books, manuscripts, and archives are
extensive. The Contemporary Medical Archives Centre (CMAC) was established
in 1979 and is based within the library. It has nearly 600 archival
collections which include the personal and working papers of
(predominantly) twentieth-century British medical practitioners, scientists,
and other individuals who have had an impact on health care, as well as
records of professional bodies, voluntary associations, research
institutions, and charities. It is a busy department with increasing numbers
of scholars using the facility each year and is continually acquiring new
collections.
We are currently seeking an Assistant Archivist in the CMAC whose duties
will include cataloguing, reader enquiries, supervision of readers in the
Poynter Room (Rare Materials Reading Area), production of archival materials,
processing reprographic orders, advising on conservation, and surveying and
appraising archives elsewhere.
You will be a fully qualified archivist with an honours degree and
postgraduate qualification in archive administration, who has at least 3
years experience in all aspects of working with an Archive Service.
Experience of automated archival databases and EAD, plus a current driving
licence would be an advantage. An interest in medical history is desirable
and the ability to work independently and as part of a team is also
required.
Salary will be on a scale from £17,887 to £23,215 per annum plus benefits.
