SENIOR LECTURER IN HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH



Advertisement


An experienced  medical statistician or health services researcher
with experience
in research, consultancy and teaching at postgraduate level,
is required for the above post.
A major part of the Senior Lecturer's research portfolio will be the
conduct
and analysis of the multi-centre, MRC funded, TOMBOLA trial of
management of
cervical dyskaryosis, but in addition he/she will be expected to
engage in
collaborative research projects in any area of health services
research.
The post holder will take part in the Institute's teaching programme
which includes
postgraduate degrees and a range of HSR training for National Health
Service
colleagues in mid-Trent.

A higher degree and substantial research and teaching experience,
together
with good organisational and communication skills are required.

Salary will be within the range GBP 29,380-31269 per annum,
depending on qualifications and experience.
This post is available from 1 July 1998 and will be offered
on a fixed-term contract until 30 June 2001.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to:         Director, Trent Institute

Job objectives:   To promote Health Services Research (HSR) in Trent
Region by

(i)   carrying out excellent health services research
(ii)  consultancy work
(iii) teaching techniques of health services research
(iv)  disseminating good practice

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.   Collaborative research.
-    Key role as statistical and epidemiological lead in the TOMBOLA
     project at the Nottingham Centre.
     (TOMBOLA is an MRC funded trial of the management of screening
     for cervical  cancer).
-    To contribute to statistical and epidemiological support in a
     multi-disciplinary team.
-    Grant applications as co-principal investigator.

2.   Consultancy
-    Health Services Research consultancy for the Trent Institute.
-    To the Focus in Primary Care.
-    Supervisory role in training new staff in consultancy.

3.   Teaching
-    Contribute to teaching on the new MRes and the MSci in Oncology
-    Short courses for health professionals and NHS managers run by
the
     Trent Institute.
-    Participating in the teaching on the New Researcher's Training
     Programme run by Trent Institute.
-    Occasional seminars/stand alone courses.

4.   Dissemination
-    Writing papers and reports
-    Conference and workshop presentations
-    Networking with health professionals and managers

5.   Any other reasonable duties to support the Institute Director.

PERSON SPECIFICATION


Essential

A higher degree in a subject relevant to Health Services Research
An appropriate publication record
Formal training in medical statistics to at least first degree level
Substantial research experience, including data management and
analysis
of large datasets.
An exceptional candidate with skills in qualitative methods
would also be considered
Ability to relate to mature students from different disciplines
within the National Health Service
Consultancy in medical statistics or health services research

Desirable

Previous involvement from the design stage in a multi-centre clinical
or epidemiological study
Experience of multi-disciplinary research
Teaching experience at postgraduate level

Personal qualities

Well-organised
Time management skills
Leadership
Ability to work with others
Good communicator both orally and in writing
Able to relate to NHS personnel at all levels
