Abstract:
Surveys of psychiatric disorders have shown increased lifetime rates
of depression in the most recent birth cohorts. Is this confined to
modern industrialised societies? Does it apply to males and females?
Could that merely reflect measurement artifacts? Is this time trend
linked to similar trends in other psychosocial disorders? The
available evidence to address these questions is reviewed. Possible
mechanisms which might underlie the secular increase in depression and
in other psychosocial disorders will be explored with a specific focus
on the changes which occur in the psychosocial context of adolescent
development.
