My own experience is using the Dolphin Student Records and CAMS
system which has a superb exam timetabling component. Although we
are not using the exam scheduler here yet, when we used
it at my previous institution it timetabled approx 6000 students for
all their exams to our requirements (no more than two exams in one
day, not more than 3 over 2 days - set to our requirements and to our
room capacity as well) in less than an hour. I don't think you could
use it without using the rest of the system but if you are looking
for a new Student Record system than I would highly recommend the
Dolphin one. We are currently installing it here to go live in
August.
My own thoughts and knowledge about using separate packages to do
specific tasks are that what appears on paper to be a simple exercise
of "just doing a simple download of data" to the stand alone system
is anything but simple and that what we are told are easy interfaces
aren't. And if the simple download is a simple download, inevitably
all sorts of problems emerge after the download which had not been
identified beforehand. I prefer to keep everything contained
within the same system wherever possible.

It looks like I may be in the market for a new computerised
examination timetabling system. Is anyone using anything
they could recommend?
How has Syllabus Plus Exams system gone in any institution
who have implemented it?
Any others?
