The following is a message from Brian Roper, University
of North London :
We note with interest the correspondence concerning the
Sunday Times data requests and the proposed strategies
for dealing with it.
We fully endorse Leslie Wagner's view concerning the need
for a consistent approach to this across the sector, and
would favour not responding at least until CVCP and HESA
have both received replies from The Sunday Times to their
recent letters.
In our own telephone communications with Karen Bayne at
the newspaper, we were told that HESA were unable to
provide them with the data they had requested - this we
know NOT to be the case for the majority of the items -
and that their intentions were to publish a guide to
universities during November in order to facilitate an
informed choice for parents and applicants going through
UCAS.
If this is indeed the intention, then the data requested
will do nothing to reflect diversity within the sector,
focusing as it does on the usual 'gold standards', and
will potentially be too late in the cycle for many
applicants anyway! We remain suspicious as to its real
intended use, and assume that it will be yet another
supplement, ranking institutions according to the
familiar indicators which we consider both inappropriate
and damaging.
