I read a whole book of WC once, because a member of the English Department
here made lofty claims for her. I don't look on it as one of the most
fruitful periods of my life. My reading of her was probably superficial -
certainly the poems came across as superficial, which I guess fits my
model... on the other hand for years my reading of Robert Duncan was
pretty superficial, but I was under no illusion about the importance, the
critical mass of that iceberg lying in wait for my self-satisfied ocean
liner.
