To answer Sarah Flynn's point about preregistration requirements, and what
other bodies do, we should remember that in fact registration is the
Society's way of recognising professional competence after initial training,
since we are not a Chartered Society. The Society may, or may not, move to
become chartered, but being a Registered Archivist puts one on the same
level as Associates of Societies such as the Museums Association and the
Lirbrary Association. Are our pre-registration requirements therefore
broadly comparable with the requirements for attaining an ALA or AMA? My
initial impression is that they are, although the LA has I believe brought
in a rather easier route to chartership than previously. We should however
perhaps guard against trying harder than anyone else to create a demanding
route just because we aren't chartered and so have something to prove.
