The hits come from a robot developed by the WebWatch project. This is a
BLRIC (British Library Research and Innovation Centre) funded project,
based at UKOLN. The aim of the project is to develop and use robot
software to analyse the use of web technologies within various UK
communities. To date we have analysed UK Public Library websites and
UK Universities and Colleges home pages.
The most recent crawl has been over eLib projects.
Further information about the project is available at the URL
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/web-focus/webwatch/
Articles on the initial two trawls are available at:
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/web-focus/webwatch/articles/
Note that the WebWatch robot was originally based on the Harvest software,
but is now a home-grown suite of Perl programs. It should not be
regarded as a search engine as it discards the contents of web pages
and stores HTML elements and their attributes.
A report on the survey of eLib projects will be produced over the next
week or so, and publicised on this list.
