Job Vacancy: Teaching and Learning Resource Development Officer,
Interactive Learning Centre, University of Southampton

We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic and hardworking individual to
join our team to contribute to our technical consultancy support to
academic staff in developing educational resources for undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching. Much of our current work involves developing the
use of the World Wide Web for teaching purposes.

the formal job specification is below:
............................................................................
.............................
The postholder will join our existing team of staff working in the
Interactive Learning Centre (ILC), based at the Highfield campus of the
University of Southampton. ILC is part of Teaching Support and Media
Services (TSMS) - a department whose central concern is the development of
the quality of teaching and learning across the University. TSMS has three
main divisions:

·	The Interactive Learning Centre

·	Media Services, which includes photography, video, design and print and
graphics

·	AV Services, which maintains and develops the teaching spaces across the
University

The Interactive Learning Centre combines staff development focused on
teaching and research with educational development work, with a particular
focus on the use of technology in teaching and learning. The Centre has a
well equipped training and resource suite of multimedia PCs. The staff of
the Centre include educational specialists, design and technology
specialists, and secretarial and technical support staff.

The post being advertised is broad-based, with many opportunities for
development. The postholder will be expected to:

·	Provide technical consultancy support to academic staff in developing
educational resources for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Much of
our current work involves developing the use of the World Wide Web for
teaching purposes.

·	Act as our liaison with one of the eight academic faculties in the
University.

·	Develop learning materials using a range of different computer-based
authoring tools.

·	Provide technical advice to academic staff.

·	Assist in the design and delivery of staff development events.
·	Evaluate new hardware and software, in support of development work within
the team.
Duties and Responsibilities

1.	Consultancy/advisory work

The postholder will work with academics - both individuals and groups -
helping them to tackle educational issues of course design and delivery,
where technology may provide part of the answer. Such work may range from
one-off consultations on specific issues through to longer-term projects,
including multimedia design and implementation.

Dependent on the interests of the successful applicant, the postholder
will also be given specific responsibility for maintaining a watching brief
on a particular faculty, and the departments within it. As such,
consultancy will not only involve responding to requests coming from
academics, but also working proactively with departments to advise them of
new developments and encourage them to make full use of the services and
support we provide.

2.	Developing learning materials

The postholder will be expected to work with colleagues on R&D projects
concerned with the development of learning materials. Such projects will
include initiative coming from academic departments, external projects run
by the Centre (eg we are involved in a variety of EU initiatives), and
commissioned work. Project teams may include subject specialists,
educational specialists and other media specialists - making team work a
vital component of the job.

3.	Staff development and teaching

The Centre puts on an extensive programme of staff development events
throughout the academic year. The postholder would be expected to
contribute to the programme, running training sessions for academic staff
on aspects of multimedia design and production. Examples of our current
programme can be accessed on the World Wide Web
(http://ilc.tsms.soton.ac.uk/training/index.stm). The postholder would
also be expected to deliver some more tailored workshops - at
faculty/departmental levels.

4.	Other

In addition, the postholder would be expected to undertake some ‘help
desk’ work, answering queries on software and hardware issues, and would
need to ensure that some working time is set aside for updating on software
and hardware developments.

The ILC has an on-going relationship with the successful Multimedia
Research Group in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science, where
the successful candidate might be considered for registration for a PhD (on
a subject of interest to the ILC).

The postholder will be expected to adhere to the Department’s and
University’s policies for health and safety.

Person Specification

1.	Well-developed personal communication skills, including an ability to
communicate technical issues to non-technical audiences.

2.	Ability to work both as a useful member of a team, and to be a
‘self-starter’ on projects and development work.

3.	Proven track record in multimedia/hypermedia project design and
development, and an interest in developing on-line learning environments.

4.	Knowledge and awareness of educational issues involved in
multimedia/hypermedia work.

5.	Detailed knowledge and skills of working within a Windows 95
environment, and proven ability to develop IT skills further.

6.	Experience with hardware (eg sound cards, disks, video cards) for IBM PC.

7.	Graduate - possibly in computer science, certainly with extensive IT
skills.

8.	Experience of teaching/training would be a distinct advantage.
