THE CHALLENGE OF IMAGE RETRIEVAL
A Workshop and Symposium on Image Retrieval
5 - 6 February 1998
Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
This two-day event aims to bridge the gap between researchers
and practitioners in the field of image data management,
bringing together researchers in information retrieval,
database, computer vision and image processing, as well as
users and providers of image and video libraries. It consists
of two separate but linked meetings:
* A Research Workshop presenting some of the latest
research in image retrieval.
* A Symposium reviewing the current state of the art in
image data management, with emphasis both on technical
developments and actual user requirements.
Delegates may register for either one or both days of the event.

THE RESEARCH WORKSHOP
This will be held in the Lipman Building at the City Campus of
the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, from 10 - 4.30 on
Thursday, 5 February 1998. It will provide a forum for
researchers in the field of image retrieval to present recent
findings and discuss research ideas on a variety of topics
related to image and video retrieval. The final programme will
be posted on the World-Wide Web no later than 15 December 1997
at http://computing.unn.ac.uk/~johne/workshop.html .
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The workshop will be of prime interest to researchers with
interests in the storage, retrieval and analysis of images and
multimedia information, as well as those with wider interests in
the fields of image processing or information retrieval. It will
also interest systems developers wishing to take advantage of
state-of-the-art research in the development of new multimedia
products or services.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
The call for papers for this workshop will remain open until 24
November. We welcome original research papers describing work in
progress or completed work on any topic related to image and video
storage and retrieval. Full instructions for authors are posted on
the Web at http://www.scms.rgu.ac.uk/research/ir/cfp1.html .

THE SYMPOSIUM
The main aim of the symposium, to be held on Friday 6 February 1998
in the Forte Posthouse Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne, is to bring
together members of the various communities with interests in the
storage, retrieval and use of images, to help bridge the gap that
currently exists between researchers and practitioners in this field.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The symposium will be of prime interest to those responsible for
managing and exploiting large image collections who wish to know
more about technological developments in the field, researchers
wishing to understand more about user needs, and multimedia
software developers aiming to gain a better understanding of the
way future markets may develop.
PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME
The keynote address, Emerging Techniques for Multimedia Information
Retrieval, will be given by Prof Ramesh C Jain of the University of
California, San Diego. The rest of the morning session will consist
of more detailed presentations on the capabilities and limitations
of current technology, including:
* Colour, texture and shape retrieval by Dr John Eakins
of the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.
* Multimedia information management and retrieval by
Prof Wendy Hall of the University of Southampton.
* An integrated approach to multimedia retrieval by Prof
David Harper of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
The afternoon session will be given over to discussions of actual
user requirements from the point of view of those managing large
collections of electronic images, and will include presentations
from:
* Ian Davis of Corbis
* Martin Stephens of the Science Museum Science and
Society Picture Library
* Dr Richard Green of the Metropolitan Police.
with a final presentation on:
* Discovering end-user requirements for image retrieval
by Dr Peter Enser of the University of Brighton.
The symposium will close with a plenary session chaired by Martin
Nail of the British Library, which will address questions raised
by delegates, and aim to identify key issues for future research
and development work in this fast-developing area.
The final programme will be posted on the World-Wide Web at
http://computing.unn.ac.uk/~johne/symposium.html no
later than 15 December 1997.
