Yes, I think you're right. With the increase in Intelligent Agents, let
alone competition from other search engines they are all having to work
that much harder to encourage people to visit their particular sites.
Search engines are now having to build up more services and offer
something different, and also create partnerships such as the one you
mention between AV and Amazon.
I predict that those search engines which survive will be the ones which
are able to offer 'one stop shopping', by including free email accounts,
chat rooms, links to full text documents (as Northern Light is doing),
full Internet searching (which is rather more than just WWW pages) and
so on.
