SCGRG Postgraduate conference: 'Enculturing Geographies'
It has come to my attention that there are some confusions as to the
organisation and purpose of the SCGRG PG conference. I thought a
posting here might help clarify things - please pass this on to PGs
who might be interested.
The committee is organising a PG conference at UCL in May, 1998.
Several academics are presenting recent research (line-up to be
confirmed soon) with an emphasis on 'ways of investigating' and 'ways
of conceptualising'. The main purpose of the conference is to
highlight the ways in which social and cultural concerns can make a
difference in geographical research. The day will contain eight
papers and several postgraduate workshops (run by postgraduates).
This organisation of the conference is hoped to be particularly
useful to new PhD and MA/MPHIL students, although all PGs will find
this extremely useful and rewarding. A mix of academic staff and
postgraduates was thought to be most approriate. This conference was
not intended to be purely a forum for postgraduate presentations, as
it was felt most appropriate that postgraduates organise such events
themselves. Hence, the committee is not asking for paper abstracts
(as was suggested in the SCGRG newsletter). It is the perceived
importance of the postgraduate community, especially in human and
social-cultural geographical research, which has prompted the
conference and the willingness of academics to participate.
I hope this clarifies things. More details will be posted soon.
