Netskills Workshop:
Creating Multimedia Web Pages
9:30 - 4:30 Tuesday 18th November 1997
At Newcastle University Training Suite
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who have
had some experience of creating basic HTML Web pages. The workshop
focuses on designing and creating multimedia Web pages and gives an
overview of some of the available facilities.
Whilst it may be attended as a stand-alone workshop, it also follows
on from the popular Netskills basic HTML workshop "Authoring on the
WWW".
It is suitable for researchers and academics from any discipline,
university administrators, librarians and computing service staff.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on
sessions with opportunities for discussion. Participants will receive
a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and
other relevant materials. Topics covered will include:
o Scene setting overview of the use of multimedia including
images, audio, animation and video.
o Investigating use of different image formats, and
animated and transparent GIFs
o Presentations on design issues, the use of plug-ins
and using Java and JavaScript in the context of multimedia.
o Demonstrate the use of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML).
o Hands-on sessions on creating attractive multimedia pages
Note that this workshop does NOT require programming skills from
participants, and so is not designed to provide Java or other
programming competencies.
By the end of the workshop participants will...
o Understand multimedia in the context of the Web and have
investigated a number of examples.
o Have found multimedia elements, for example images, on the Web
and have adapted them for inclusion in Web pages.
o Understand what JavaScript is, how it fits in with other
programming technologies on the Web, such as Java, and have
incorporated an example of JavaScript in a Web page.
o Understand the key design issues associated with writing
multimedia Web pages.
Workshop Requirements:
Participants MUST know how to write a simple HTML page, but
participants need no other special technical skills; however, for the
hands-on sessions they will find it helpful to have had some
experience of using a PC and the Microsoft Windows environment.
The cost of the workshop is 55 pounds for participants from higher
education (Netskills is funded by the Higher Education Funding
Councils). Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
