MSc in Social Research and the Environment
Department of Sociology & Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES)

This full time MSc combines the strengths of the Depatment of Sociology and
CES to provide students with a firm grounding in social research methods and
knowledge of the contribution which sociology can make to understanding and
addressing environmental problems.
The main objectives of the course are to ensure that students:
- are familiar with the range of research techniques commonly used by
social scientists, and those used in environmental assessment.
- are familiar with current methodological and theoretical debates in
sociology and specifically those concerned with the environment
- acquire a comprehensive knowledge of environmental problems and issues
- are able to apply social research skills and sociological insights to
environmental research projects.
- have completed a dissertation which might serve as a starting point for
doctoral research
Students take eight courses in:
Research Design
Sociological Theory and Method
Data Analysis
Field Methods
Sociology of the Environment
Environmental Politics, Policy and Law
Environmental Assessment
Basic Environmental Science
and write a dissertation based on empirical research.
Applicants should have a degree in a social science at 2.1 standard or higher.
