Both the successes and the shortcomings of the DC effort to date point
to a need for greater formalization in the process and guidance of the
overall effort. We hope that the improvements in the Homepage reflect
this, but much more must be done, and I encourage your input on managing
developments.
I. Anticipated homepage developments:
FAQ
Working group charters and documents
User Guides
DC-Simple
DC with qualifiers
Registry of recommended (but not exhaustive):
sub-elements
formats
types
schemes
Tools
Corpus of examples (vetted by a Usage Committee)
II. Close liaison with related standards groups and stakeholder
communities
To date, this has been accomplished by means of common personnel,
and I expect this to continue, but at times it may be appropriate to
identify explicit relationships. Examples of current ad hoc lines of
communication with other communities include:
MARC and Marbi Rebecca Guenther and Priscilla Caplan
W3C Eric Miller, Renato Iannella, and Ralph Swick
NDLF Robin Wendler, Rebecca Guenther
NSF DLI program Mary Larsgaard, Terry Smith, others
IFLA Terry Kuny
Z39.50 Ralph LeVan, Ray Denenberg, Cliff Lynch, others
GILS Eliot Christian
There are others as well. Every effort will be taken to sustain
this broad perspective and diverse input.
III. Standing committee structure
Several people have suggested the possibility of a formal Advisory
Committee (The DCAC?) to act as a steering committee for the workshops
and the standard itself. It is probably time to consider this seriously
and in our planning for a standardized future.
There is possibly a role for a Usage Committee as well, to build the
corpus of official examples and guide Best Practice.
