Could the goals in establishing "resource types" be defined as:
1. Enhancing access to desired materials. (can be measured by the number of
times this pick list selection is used in a search engine and produces
useful search results?)
2. Comprehensive subtyping of all Internet doucuments.
In terms of resource discovery the length of interaction with the resource
may be an important
for a pick list selection from a search engine. One shortcoming of the
current resource types listed by Roy Tennant at
http://sunsite.Berkeley.EDU/Metadata/types.html is that there isn't a way
at getting at abstracts, summaries, introductions, annotations, teasers,
blurbs, briefs, and resource descriptions. All searchers find a need to
browse blurbs and introductions rather than full content. This is a
standard way that individuals navigate an information space. As a practical
example, it would be unfortunate to provide a search interface that matched
on a Medline abstract when in fact the user was trying to get at the full
text article.
"Time to access subject matter", although not elegant, would seem to be a
greater aid for information access than Software or Data resource types. In
biomedicine, there are perhaps 20 useable "Software Programs" and about the
same number of "Data items" on the Internet . These will not be of use to
our community. We have about 20 million text and images and constitute
about 15-20% of Internet traffic.

don't think length is a factor
