Resource Types
Arthur,
You said, "... I don't see how this differs from using "Source" for
a book. The digital resource is what the metadata is indexing. The
original painting and information associated with it belongs in
"Source", the same as a book on which an electronic resource is
based."
The problem we're trying to solve is that by smooshing all the
information about the original (which is what we believe the searcher
is actually looking for) into Source, you do a disservice to the
searcher. When he queries for Van Gogh in the creator element, he'd
get zero hits.
At one point we turned it inside out and said use all the other
elements to describe the original and instead of a Source element,
have a Surrogate element and jam all the surrogate info into it.
But we wised up and came up with a better compromise that is easier
to implement, we hope: two sets of DC elements, one for the original
and one for the surrogate.
striving to please all the people all the time,
Ricky
