A general introduction to sampling is given in Chapter 1 of Vic
Barnett "Sample Survey Principles and Methods" (Edward Arnold, 1991
ISBN 0-340-54553-4) or Chapter 4 of C.A. Moser and G. Kalton "Survey
Methods in Social Investigation" (2nd Edition, Heinemann, 1971).
A very readable introduction to the idea of sampling distributions is
given in Chapter 3 of Lawrence Mohr "Understanding Significance
Testing" (Sage, 1990).
Bill Williams "A Sampler on Sampling" (Wiley, 1978) gives a clear,
non-mathematical introduction to sampling.
