In response to Christopher Ray (17th Sept) and Robert Polson's (18th
Sept) comments and call for further input on the nature of 'the
critical' and the future direction
of the forum, I feel strongly that we should work to keep a forum
which attempts to maintain a critical element. Tranpossing into
a human geography forum, for example, an idea Christopher Ray
mooted, would, I fear, send us in the direction of a blander,
universalised geography. This is perhaps oversating the case, but I
believe there are enough mainstream avenues in which we can engage
with geaography without being critically aware of the wider
implications of our field.
Let me declare an interest. I follow a considerable tradition of
academics who believe that those of us working in the Academy
have an additional burdon of responsibility placed upon us by the
very nature of our placement within its elite folds. Drawing on what
Harvey (96), for example calls 'foundational
principles' I hope that one of the roles such a forum can play is to
show some examples of the ways in which we can engage in issues
of ethics and justice.
There are of course many other elements to 'the critical' and
reasons, I believe, to continue to draw on the term.
I look forward to reflecting on the veiws of others, and enclose a
forwarded message which may be of interest to some members of the
list, Ian Maxey.
