Following my participation in a workshop on Z39.50 vendor products
organised by Fay Turner, National Library of Canada at IFLA in
Copenhagen, I received the following information, and would encourage
projects which relate to Z39.50 to view the NLC page and maybe help
improve end-user ease of use of Z-based services:-
<quoted from email from Fay Turner>
In response to your last sentence "Do you know what further
dissemination
about the topics covered in the workshop there will be?", the National
Library of Canada has a new Web page for Z39.50 application issues:
URL: http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/resource/vcuc/z3950ap.htm
It currently contains a number of documents we have prepared but we
are
anxious to include contributions from other organizations and projects
which have document the problems and issues regarding meaningful
Z39.50
interoperability. Please let me know of any documents or sites that
qualify.
As the result of the last ZIG meeting discussions, we should see by
the
end of the month a proposal for how to handle holdings data. Keep
checking the ZIG list. I will also try to get the ZIG to focus on
other
interoperability issues for which we need a uniform approach by all
vendors, however, the suppport from other organizations to get the ZIG
focussed on these concerns would certainly help.
