Dear All
I followed the debate this summer about the exclusionary way in which
we disseminate knowledge as academics because we insist on using the
English language in conferences and publications.
You all sound right on and very caring about respecting others'
linguistic origins. Great...
And yet in everyday work it seems we continue to sit upon high horses
of grammatical and linguistic correctness. I recently received
comments on a paper submitted for publication; it came back with the
words 'In places, the English is careless' at the end - no examples
or explanation.
I sincerely hope this referee is not a member of
crit-geog for she or he would be horrified to learn English is my
second language and I continue to have occasional problems with it in
written form.
I agree - English is an exclusionary and difficult language - but how
are we going to progress when attitudes like this continue to show
amongst those who act as gatekeepers to entry into the academic
world?
