Keeping and paying for a national digital archive
We are in the final stages of an investigation into attitudes towards the
Responsibility for Digital Archiving and Long Term Access to Digital Data
in the UK and Ireland. During the investigation we asked representatives
of different stake-holding groups about:
Responsibility for the long-term preservation of digital material.
Formats in which digital material should be kept.
Funding for the preservation activities.
Copyright issues.
Access to digital archives
We have developed a model which describes one possible way forward,
including the establishment of a National Office of Digital Archiving
(NODA). We invite your comments on the model which can be found at the
following Website:
http://www.dha-info.demon.co.uk/digital.htm
If you are able to reply before the 5 September 1997 we will incorporate
your views in our final report to the Digital Archiving Working Group. Any
comments after that date will be forwarded on directly to the National
Preservation Office.
This study is part of a programme funded by JISC as a result of a workshop
on the Long Term Preservation of Electronic Materials held at Warwick in
November 1995. The programme of studies is guided by the Digital Archiving
Working Group, which reports to the Management Committee of the National
Preservation Office and is administered by the British Library Research and
Innovation Centre.
