We are having very preliminary discussions with a publisher about bringing
out a collection of essays on a particular topic. We hope that this will be a
significant contribution to the topic in hand. For various reasons
several of the essays would appear in some form on the web also (in a
managed environment).
We have also had some discussion with another publisher about
putting pre-publication drafts of accepted articles on the web. We would
explicitly acknowledge that it is a pre-publication draft and ask people
to refer to the print version.
In each case there is resistance to the web presence.
I can understand this, but feel that the advantages of the web presence
outweigh the disadvantages - for the publisher, as well as for us and
for potential readers.
Any discussion must acknowledge that we are in a transitional situation -
that the informal things we do now may be overtaken when appropriate
frameworks are put in place.
I would like to work up some thoughts on this and would welcome any input.
I would be happy to summarise comments and distribute in due course.
