(Apologies for the cross-posting if you get this more than once)
The ROADS project announces the release today of ROADS
version 1.00 after an extensive period of beta testing. ROADS
v1.00 is now the recommended successor to ROADS v0.2.5 and
has been running successfully on the Social Science
Information Gateway service for some weeks. See:
<URL:http://sosig.ac.uk/>
ROADS provides a "tool kit" for supporting subject based information
gateways. It provides a web based template editor and administration
centre, browsable subject lists using multiple subject descriptors, a
CGI based search frontend to a WHOIS++ leaf node server and highly
configurable HTML output. All the scripts are written in Perl 5 and its
possible to "pick and choose" which bits of ROADS are used (so that, for
example, our Perl based WHOIS++ server can be replaced by Digger or IKnow
if desired). The use of Perl allows user to modify and extend our
software to their own needs.
ROADS v1 software can be freely downloaded from
<URL:ftp://ftp.roads.lut.ac.uk/pub/ROADS/roads-v1.00.tar.Z>
Documentation to accompany this release is at
<URL:ftp://ftp.roads.lut.ac.uk/pub/ROADS/roadsdocs-v1.00.tar.Z>.
There will be no further development work carried out on
ROADS v1. An alpha release of version 2 will be made
available within the next seven days. Contact
[log in to unmask] if you wish to take part in the alpha/beta
testing program for ROADS v2.
ROADS has been developed with funding from the UK Electronic Libraries
Programme (<URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/elib/> and the European Commision
DESIRE Project (<URL:http://www.nic.surfnet.nl/surfnet/projects/desire/>).
