EDINA NATIONAL DATASET CENTRE
POSITION AVAILABLE FOR:
SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Edinburgh University Data Library was designated one of three UK dataset
centres for the academic community in 1995. EDINA, the National Services
of the Data Library, offers the academic community access to bibliographic
datasets and research data (see http://edina.ed.ac.uk for details). These
form part of the Ôvirtual libraryÕ for UK higher education, alongside the
services offered by BIDS, MIDAS and others.
A Software Engineer is required for the Service Delivery Team, to
contribute to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of
national data services accessed through the EDINA gateway. Existing
bibliographic services use either IDIÕs BASISplus document management
system, or OCLCÕs SiteSearch database system, within a UNIX (Solaris)
environment.
The appointee will participate in the design and implementation of
database schema and user interfaces, working with other EDINA staff and
possibly with staff from other academic institutes (such as university or
other academic libraries). The position requires knowledge and experience
of UNIX, software and database design and high level programming
languages. Experience of Web programming with HTML and CGI scripting
using Perl would be a definite advantage. The successful applicant for
this position must be able both to take initiative and to work as part of
a team.
The appointment is for up to three years in the first instance. An early
start is preferred.
Salary on scale: £17,606 - £22,785 p.a.
