Lectureship
1. NATURE OF APPOINTMENT
The University of Strathclyde invites applications for a lectureship in
information science. This is a small and highly committed department which
was awarded a 4 in the last Research Assessment Exercise. It was also one
of a group of Departments that was awarded Scotland's only Excellent in the
area of Business and Management Studies under the Teaching Quality
Assessment.
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to
research and publication in either of the two main research areas of the
Department:
* Knowledge and Information Retrieval
* Information Management.
The successful candidate will teach on the Department's Postgraduate
courses and may also be expected to make a contribution to other courses
(MSc in Information Management and MSc in Information & Library Studies)
within the Faculty which are serviced by the Department. The appointment
will be made on the lecturer IA/IB scale.

3. THE DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE
The Department of Information Science currently consists of four Senior
Lecturers and five Lecturers (including this vacancy). There are three
supporting technical and secretarial staff. A list of research activities
and associated members of staff is attached. The successful candidate will
be expected to contribute to the activities of one of the two main research
groupings.
Since its formation in 1985, the Department has been successful in securing
in excess of £2 million of funding in the areas of information retrieval,
knowledge based systems, hypermedia and information management. The
Department was awarded a 4 in the recent Research Assessment Exercise. This
represents a national reputation in all, and an international reputation in
some, of its research activities. It was also awarded an excellent in the
recent Teaching Quality Assessment as part of the Business and Management
group. Strathclyde was the only Scottish institute to receive this, the
highest rating possible.
The Department has a growing Doctoral programme and the successful
candidate will be expected to assist in the supervision of a small number
of higher degree students. The Department offers MSc Instructional Courses
in Information Management and Information and Library studies, and has a
growing MPhil/PhD programme. The Department also provides input to the MBA
and MSc in Business Information Technology Systems and to undergraduate
classes in the Business School. The successful candidate will teach on the
Department's Postgraduate courses and may also be expected to make a
contribution to other courses within the Faculty which are serviced by the
Department.
4. SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The salary offered on appointment will be at an appropriate point of the
Lecturer Grade A or Lecturer Grade B scale depending on the experience,
qualifications and age of the successful candidate.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE: RESEARCH GROUPINGS, 1997-98
The Department was awarded a 4 in the recent Research Assessment Exercise
and its research is organised into two main groupings:
* Knowledge and Information Retrieval
* Information Management.
1. Knowledge and Information Retrieval
Specific interests in the area of knowledge and information retrieval include:
* Applied natural language processing.
* Content analysis and representation.
* Systems architecture.
* Multi-lingual IR.
* Distributed systems.
* Hypertext and hypermedia
* Knowledge discovery.
* Uncertainty.
* Decision support.
The Department places a strong emphasis on the integration of technologies
and has applied the results of research to the veterinary, medical, and
agricultural sectors. Recent and current research projects in the
Department include:
* Development of hybrid information systems to aid modelling and
decision making in the area of veterinary medicine (Funded by ODA/ILRAD).
* Development of a Web site for Lyme disease (Funded under the EU
Concerted Action on Lyme Borrelliosis)
* Design and implementation of a multi-lingual information retrieval
system (Funded under EU ESPRIT - Project 8488 STAMP).
* Feasibility study into the development of a Register of Research
Expertise in Scottish Universities (Funded by SHEFC)

Ruairi O'Donnell, Crawford Revie, and Duncan Sinclair.
2. Information Management
The Department has a well-established reputation as one of the leading
centres of excellence in this area in the UK. Information management is a
key component in its taught courses and many MSc and MBA dissertations are
supervised in this area. It has specific interests in:
* Marketing, pricing and value of information and information services.
* Impact of information systems and supply on organisations.
* Information flows.
* Development and implementation of information strategies.
* Regulation and policy issues.
* Impact of IT on information handling systems.
* Information management tools.
* Impact of networks on library and information services.
* Development of the virtual library.
Recent or current research projects include:
* Business use of the Internet (BL R&D)
* Studies on the value of information (BL R&D)
* Impact of the electronic journal (SLIC)
* Development of a research register for Scottish universities (SHEFC).
* Effective design communication (Design Council)
