Re your comments on the Web http://sunsite.Berkeley.EDU/Metadata/types.html
I am not sure if we may not be going backwards and getting even
more complicated that we started out being. I do think that a
hierarchical system is the best way to proceed, however, and it
does fit in with the other Dublin Core semantics.
Comments - constructive I hope!
DOCUMENT
==========================================================
Abstract - Could be placed as a subgroup under Article
--------
Advertisement - Job advertisements could perhaps come under Webpage
------------- personal - but that is only one small type of advertisement
with which we are plagued. I believe we need a category
for this somewhere.
Minutes - I am not sure why this one need be there - if you mean jotted
------- notes - then could be better placed as a subgroup under
Correspondence. If Minutes of Proceedings, etc. or a meeting
I would suggest a new heading "Proceedings" and place it under
that. -----------
under Monograph - what about a Part of a Book - a Chapter from a book
for example - In a previous version we had "InBook". Perhaps add
a subgroup under Monograph called "Chapter or part".
---------------
Media Release - this is one we use a lot - covers Press Releases etc. -
------------- Can't be classified well under any other category as I
see it - certainly not Fact Sheet.
I would thing that "Poem", "Story" and "Essay" could perhaps be combined
into a subgrouping together.
Proceedings - could, perhaps come under Papers, but often these are a
----------- collection of papers. In paper terms, these often came out
as a monograph - but on the Web, not so - more a collection
of Proceedings/Papers/Minutes, etc. onder a Conference or
Workshop heading.
Under Webpage - add Project as a subheading
-------
IMAGE
==============================================================
3D Objects are not necessarily "Interactive", whereas a number
of 2D images etc. may be. Perhaps 3D and VR better come under
Graphic and drop Interactive altogether as a category.
The division under Photograph seems very odd - but I can live with it.
But then, what about micrographs, Xrays, SEM (scanning electron
micrographs), etc.
Under Graphic add a subheading Map
---
SOFTWARE
==============================================================
I am wondering about "Manual" or if it comes under DOCUMENT.
DATASET
==============================================================
I suggest that this be changed to DATA rather than DATASET
----
Add: Spatial - or perhaps replace Cartographic with Spatial
------- -------
cartographic data is only one form of spatial data.
Add Textual - many of the reports from a database will be textual data
------- they don't fit under documents etc., they are Textual Data
Remove Spreadsheet - this is a software for holding other types of data,
e.g. statistical, textual, spatial, etc. It doesnot belong here.
I am pondering also the term Metadata - as another category here, but
can't quite make up my mind as it is generally textual data in anycase.
==============================================================
Now this brings me to some ambivalence. Does a Map produced from a
database come under "Data.spatial" or "Image.Graphic.Map"????
Food for thought at least (I think I would place it under the latter).
regards
Arthur
