Hello,
I am new to this list and may have missed a crucial part of this
discussion but ... in the research of exisiting genre headings, is contact
being made with the folks at Library of Congress who are developing a
controlled vocabulary of just such terms? It certainly seems that working
together with them on this would be beneficial, especially considering the
desired compatibility between Dublin Core and MARC formats. Tom Yee and
Barbara Tillet, of the Cataloging Policy and Support Office at LC, are
contacts for information on this project.

I agree with Terry Kuny that we need some kind of heirarchical
arrangement or else we'll have a real mess on our hands. I also agree
with Peter Graham that whenever possible it is a good idea to not
reinvent the wheel. Therefore I am taking some time to research
appropriate schemes and thesauri and will make an attempt to synthesize a
proposal from a variety of sources.
All the pointers and information that folks have been posting have been
really helpful, thanks. If anyone knows of a thesaurus that may inform
this effort, please let me know. Thanks,
Roy Tennant
