Dear CGF
I picked this off the social policy list and thought it might be of
interest to list members.
best wishes

You might like to respond to this extract from the New Scientist which I
only got hold of today. Very short notice but a social policy input is
clearly relevant.
"Claire Short, the Secretary of State for International Development,
tells me that she and her staff are preparing a White Paper on
International Development. An issue they intend to address is the role of
research and the generation of knowledge in the elimination of poverty,
stabilising population growth and the protection of the environment. A
major target set by the UN for all aid donors working with developing
countries is to halve the proportion of people living in poverty by the
year 2015.
The minister wants Britain's scientists and their research institutes to
consider what they might be able yto contribute to the agenda to
eradicate poverty. And she wants researchfunded by the DFID (Dept of
Int. Devt) to be assessed by the benefits it can bring to poor people. She
warns that the quality of research must be high, relevant and
well-managed.
The DFID, which spent more than #80 million in 1996 through its
technology development research budgets, is consulting widely in
putting together the White Paper. Any readers of New Scientist able to
contribute should write to Short at the DFID, 94 Victoria St, London,
SW15 5JL by the end of July."
One fax no for the DFID is 0171-917-0831 and you might like to use that
to save time. I will warn Christine Atkins on that number that I have
done this. Given that DFID hads recently invited bids for
social-policy-oriented research, I would encourage members to respond,
however briefly.
With best wishes
Adrian
